Scallops and sea urchins and turtles (and more) - Oh my!!!

Today was a magical day which began with a visit to the only scallop farming lab in Brazil. At the lab, we met scientists and learned all about the process of cultivating scallops - a process which takes years and great care. In addition to learning all about scallops, we had an opportunity to touch a variety of sea creatures in one of the water tanks. The sea urchin was of great interest as you can see!!

Below you see a photo of the various "lanterns" (different sizes) which show the many stages of scallop production. The lab was exciting but it was even more exciting to later visit an actual scallop "farm" in the sea!!

As we were sailing between the lab and the aquaculture sites, we were intrigued and stunned by several areas which have had recent severe and devastating mud slides (you may recall hearing about these deadly mud slides a few months ago when this area of Brazil had massive rainfall). Here is a photo where you can see the devastation and severity of the mud slides.

On a much happier note, I have been so surprised and thrilled at our luck in encountering all sorts of natural and marine life!! Check out the photos of who we stumbled upon today!!

  2. Do you mean you all actually got to go to one of the locations where the scallop lab "deposits" the scallops for a local farmer?
